  1. Review the scenario

  2. Review the recommended readings

  3. Prepare responses to the questions so that you can fully engage in the call.

  1. Scenario

  • A fintech launches an AI-driven microcredit platform in partnership with the country’s two largest mobile money providers and the largest licensed microfinance institution.

  • The fintech uses alternative data (mobile usage, social media, transaction history).

  • It promises rapid inclusion but raises concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias, cybersecurity, and consumer protection.

  1. Recommended Readings: Real World Examples

  • Mastercard (2025): Harnessing the Transformative Power of AI in Africa – This report highlights how AI is being applied across sectors, including financial services, with specific references to Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. It discusses both the opportunities for inclusion and the risks of bias, fragmented regulation, and consumer protection challenges.

  • Chatbots for Microfinance (2024): Conversational AI for Microcredit – This case study explores how microfinance institutions are using AI-powered chatbots to expand access to credit, automate processes, and reach underserved populations. It also highlights risks around data privacy and exclusion.

  1. Questions to Prepare

  • What do you think are the key risks involved in launching this platform?

  • How would you prioritise these risks?

  • What trade-offs between innovation and consumer protection do you anticipate?

  • What supervisory tools would you apply and how?

  • Formulate a supervisory report to address the risks you have identified as high priority.
